ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Blair Academy) scored a career-high 19 points and registered seven assists as the No. 16 Randolph-Macon men's basketball team defeated Guilford 72-54 in ODAC action Saturday afternoon at Crenshaw Gymnasium for its eighth straight victory.
Badger nailed five three-pointers, also a career best, for the Yellow Jackets (11-2, 4-0 ODAC). He was 7 for 9 from the floor and 5 for 7 behind the arc. R-MC buried a season-high 15 treys, going 15 for 32 from behind the arc (.469).
The Quakers (9-4, 2-2 ODAC) started the game with an 8-2 spurt before three-pointers by senior Akeem Holmes (King William, Va./King William) and junior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) tied it at 8-8 six minutes into the contest. Guilford enjoyed a five-point lead at 22-17 with eight minutes left in the half before R-MC closed within one at 24-23. The Quakers were up 26-23 with 3:30 on the clock before the Yellow Jackets closed the half on a 12-1 run to take a 35-27 advantage at the break. Badger was 3 for 3 on three-pointers for nine points, while freshman Mike Silverthorn (Hackettstown, N.J./Blair Academy) also sank three treys for nine points. Holmes put up eight points and led R-MC with four rebounds.
Badger hit a jumper and a three-pointer to start the second half to put R-MC up by 13 and the Yellow Jackets maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half. R-MC began the second half on a 19-8 run to push the lead to 19 at 54-35 eight minutes into the period. The lead was as large as 21 at 66-45 with 5:20 left before finishing with a 72-54 victory.
Holmes finished with 14 points and five rebounds, while senior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) added 10 points and five boards.
Freshman Rip Engel (New Town, Pa./Life Center Academy) had five assists and a pair of steals along with a three-pointer off the bench for the Yellow Jackets. R-MC had 22 assists on 27 field goals.
R-MC shot 49% from the floor (27-55), while holding Guilford to 35% shooting (21-60).
Matt McCarthy led the Quakers with 12 points.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 14 with a 7 p.m. ODAC contest at Hampden-Sydney.
