R-MC Women’s Soccer Starts 5-0 with 2-0 Win at CUA

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior forward Gabby Nelson (Clover, Va./Halifax County) scored her fourth goal of the week in the first half and added an assist in the second half as the Randolph-Macon women's soccer team won 2-0 at Catholic on Sunday afternoon on Day 2 of the DC Classic Catholic Tournament to improve to 5-0 for the first time since 1995.

How it Happened:

  • The Yellow Jackets had five shots in the first seven minutes of the contest before the Cardinals got off their lone two shots of the first half. In the 24th minute, Nelson put in a loose ball following a corner kick to give R-MC a 1-0 advantage.
  • R-MC had a 14-2 advantage in shots in the first period, including 8-0 for shots on goal. The Yellow Jackets had a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
  • The Yellow Jackets doubled their lead early in the second half as Nelson fed sophomore forward Nicole Czyzewski (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) in the 52nd minute as R-MC took a 2-0 lead.
  • The Cardinals has eight shots in the second half but could not light up the scoreboard.
  • Senior Christina Newman (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) and sophomore Edye Carr (Clinton, N.C./Clinton) combined on the third shutout of the season for the Yellow Jackets. Newman did not face a shot on goal in the first half, while Carr corralled a pair of saves in the second half.

By The Numbers

  • R-MC doubled CUA in shots 20-10. The Yellow Jackets had a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal. Nelson paced the visitors with seven shots, including five on goal. Junior midfielder Casey Kent (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) fired four shots, half of which were on goal.
  • Nelson leads the Yellow Jackets with five goals and 12 points. She has registered at least one point in each games this season. Nelson has scored at least one goal in each of the past four matches.
  • Czyzewski is third on the club with two goals.

For the Record

  • The Yellow Jackets have started 5-0 for the first time since 1995. R-MC won its first 13 matches before recording a tie against Mary Washington. The Yellow Jackets finished the 1995 campaign with a 19-1-2 mark.
  • R-MC had four players named to the All-Tournament Team: Nelson, Kent, junior midfielder McKenna Maier (Henrico, Va./Deep Run) and freshman defender Olivia Adams (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover).
