#1 R-MC Women’s Soccer Wins ODAC Title on Penalty Kicks

ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore goalkeeper Edye Carr (Clinton, N.C./Clinton) saved the fourth penalty kick by Virginia Wesleyan, and sophomore midfielder Maddie Bauman (Smithfield, Va./Smithfield) put the final PK into the top right corner of the net as 14th-ranked and top-seeded Randolph-Macon claimed its 13th ODAC Women's Soccer Championship after playing to a scoreless tie with the third-seeded Marlins on Sunday afternoon.

The Basics:

Records: Randolph-Macon 20-0-1, Virginia Wesleyan 13-3-4

How it Happened:

  • The Marlins had the advantage in the first half. The VWU defense held the Yellow Jackets to one shot. The Marlins had a 6-1 advantage in shots, including 2-0 for shots on goal. Senior Christina Newman (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) recorded a pair of saves for R-MC. The Marlins also had a 2-0 edge in corner kicks.
  • VWU stayed aggressive early in the second half, taking the first two shots after intermission. Junior midfielder Casey Kent (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) had two of R-MC's first three shots in the second period as the Yellow Jackets looked to push the action. R-MC had its best scoring chance in the 85th minute, as junior forward Meghan Skevington (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) had a shot that hit the crossbar. The second half would end in a scoreless draw. After just one shot in the first half, the Yellow Jackets put up eight in the second stanza.
  • The only shot on goal for R-MC came in the 93rd minute, as senior forward Gabby Nelson (Clover, Va./Halifax County) hit a shot that was saved. Nelson had another shot in the 105th minute that went wide. The match remained scoreless, necessitating penalty kicks to determine the conference champion.
  • R-MC won the toss and elected to go first. Kent sent her shot successfully inside the left post. Kennedi Anders from VWU sent her shot to the left of Carr.
  • Sophomore forward Bonita Soliday (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) went to the lower right corner and was good. Reina Araujo went over the head of Carr to make it 2-2.
  • Sophomore defender Jules Heuchan (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay School) stepped up and quickly put the ball in the top right of the net. Allie Angell went low right to keep PKs tied.
  • Junior midfielder McKenna Maier (Henrico, Va./Deep Run) went low past the keeper for R-MC. Sarah Heinbaugh's shot was saved by Carr, giving the Yellow Jackets a 4-3 edge in PKs. Bauman put the ball in the top right of the net to start the celebrating for R-MC.

By The Numbers:

  • VWU finished with a 15-14 edge in shots, although the Yellow Jackets had a 5-1 edge in overtime shots. Nelson had five shots, Kent four and Skevington two.
  • The Marlins had five corner kicks during regulation, while R-MC's lone corner came in the first overtime period.
  • Newman and Carr combined on the 14th shutout of the season for R-MC.

For The Record:

  • The ODAC All-Tournament Team consisted of Kent, Nelson, Carr and senior defender Haley Silva (Henrico, Va./Deep Run) from R-MC; Shae Geary, Kennedi Anders and Sam Crawford from VWU; Cyan Coates and Hanna Randolph of Bridgewater; and Erin Hoeh and Emily Roche' of Washington and Lee.
  • R-MC won its 13th ODAC Championship in women's soccer and first since 1996. The Yellow Jackets have made 16 appearances in the title game. VWU has one crown in 11 championship game appearances.
  • The last time the Yellow Jackets were involved in penalty kicks was in the quarterfinals of the 2018 ODAC Championship. Second-seeded R-MC hosted seventh-seeded Shenandoah. Each team had a goal in the second half, but neither could score in overtime. Maier hit a PK to snap a 3-3 deadlock and Carr saved the final attempt by the Hornets as R-MC advanced to the semifinals.
