ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon Head Volleyball Coach Bill Rogers guided his team to a pair of important Old Dominion Athletic Conference victories Saturday. In the process, Rogers won his 400th career match, of which all have come as he has built Randolph-Macon Women's Volleyball into a regionally and nationally respected program. Today's matches were part of a quad match at R-MC that included Emory & Henry, Virginia Wesleyan and Guilford.
Randolph-Macon 3, Guilford 0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-15)
In the early stages, neither team was able to jump ahead by more than one. R-MC advanced a three-point lead but quickly lost it as Guilford came back to tie the set at 13. Again R-MC jumped out with four straight points, getting ahead 17-13. This time the Yellow Jackets were able to keep the advantage and never gave it up as R-MC won the set 25-22.
Guilford looked to have the early advantage in the second set. The Quakers picked up four of six points to go up by two at 10-8. But R-MC roared back with four straight, gaining the lead 12-10. R-MC held the lead until the Quakers ripped off five of six points, tying the match at 20-20. From there, R-MC was able to close out the set with five of the next seven to win 25-22.
R-MC pushed ahead to an early lead in the third frame. But the Quakers came back quickly, scoring four of the next five to get a one-point edge. R-MC repaid the favor though, earning four straight. From there, the Yellow Jackets never gave up the lead as R-MC began building a run that eventually stretched into seven straight points. That edge was enough to secure the set and match victory as R-MC won the third frame 25-15.
Freshman Grace Parker (Andover, N.J. / Pope John XXIII) led the Yellow Jackets with 11 kills, while senior Miranda Hall (Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover) was close behind with ten. Seniors Alexia Wolfe (Midlothian, Va. / James River) and Bailey Jones (Suffolk, Va. / Norfolk Collegiate) added nine and eight kills respectively as well.
Senior Kai Cunningham had a career-best six blocks, including two solo efforts. Sophomore Madison Warlick (Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle) led the Yellow Jackets defensively with 19 digs. Randolph-Macon 3, Emory & Henry 0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-20)
R-MC hit at a .372 clip in the second game of the afternoon.
The incredible hitting percentage was on display early on. After the Wasps took an 8-6 lead, R-MC went on a 11-1 run, which included three kills by Koch and a service ace from each Warlick and Tender. The Yellow Jackets closed out the frame on a 6-1 run to win 25-13.
The strong performance by R-MC kept going into the second set. For much of the set, R-MC forced E&H to sideout each time the Wasps scored, only allowing the visitors to score consecutively late when the set was already in hand. All the while though, R-MC was putting together runs, including of 3-0, 8-0 and 5-0. The Yellow Jackets earned the 25-11 victory in the frame.
In the third set, the Wasps pushed the Yellow Jackets harder, but it was R-MC that pulled away through the middle of the set. Out of the 5-5 tie, R-MC earned eight of the next ten points to go ahead 13-7. R-MC got in front by as many as six, but E&H began to string some points together in the middle stages of the set. The Wasps got as close as two points late in the frame, but R-MC kept the distance, eventually winning the set 25-19.
Koch had a career-high 15 kills and hit at a stunning 73.7%, making 19 attacks and just one error. Hall collected ten kills and hit at a .615 clip as well. Parker and Wolfe each added seven kills.
Cunningham finished with two blocks.
Tender tallied a team-high four service aces on the game, while also leading the Yellow Jackets for assists with 23. Warlick led the team defensively with 13 digs and threw in two service aces as well.
