FERRUM, Va. – Randolph-Macon Women's Volleyball earned a sweep of both Old Dominion Athletic Conference foes it faced Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets defeated both the Roanoke Maroons and the Ferrum Panthers in a tri-match hosted by the Panthers.
Randolph-Macon 3, Roanoke 0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-19)
Randolph-Macon attacked at a .405 clip, including .500 in the first set as the Yellow Jackets cruised to the win against the Maroons.
The Yellow Jackets got out to a solid start. R-MC started by earning ten of the first 14 points. R-MC kept the pace on and never allowed Roanoke to get closer than five as R-MC won 25-14.
It was a similar story in the second set. After a 1-1 tie, R-MC ripped off five in a row and ten of the next 12. The set of five in a row started with freshman Grace Parker (Andover, N.J. / Pope John XXIII) making a service ace. The sequence also included kills by seniors Bailey Jones (Suffolk, Va. / Norfolk Collegiate), Kai Cunningham (Virginia Beach, Va. / Kempsville) and Alexia Wolfe (Midlothian, Va. / James River). Roanoke made a bid to fight back, getting as close as 12-16, but R-MC's early push helped ensure the Yellow Jackets earned the win 25-17.
Roanoke opened the third set with the lead, quickly grabbing a 4-1 advantage. But R-MC fired back and tied it at 4-4 on another service ace from Parker. The closest set of the match kept that pace for much of the frame, with Roanoke grabbing a second lead at 14-13. The back-and-forth continued all the way to an 18-18 tie. But R-MC closed the set and match on fire with two kills from Wolfe, three from Parker, a service ace from junior Mackenzie Loewe (Leonardtown, Md. / St. Mary's Ryken) and a final kill from sophomore Sydney Koch (Raleigh, N.C. / Sanderson) as R-MC won 25-19.
Parker led the team with ten kills and three service aces. Jones and Koch each added eight kills. Senior Angela Tender (Manassas, Va. / Stone Bridge) and sophomore Macguire Gubba (Grove City, Pa. / Grove City Area School District) made 18 and 17 clean passes respectively. Gubba also led the team with 11 digs and was followed closely by Loewe with eight. Cunningham led the team at the net with three blocks.
Randolph-Macon 3, Ferrum 0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-11)
The Yellow Jackets had another tremendous game hitting, capturing a .430 attack percentage.
R-MC started off well with eight of the first 12 points. The Yellow Jackets built to a 16-5 lead and pushed it out to a 21-9 lead. But Ferrum had a run of its own, scoring a 9-1 run and bringing the score back within four at 22-18. R-MC was able to close out the set with kills from junior Kristina Smith (Virginia Beach, Va. / Cape Henry), Wolfe and Cunningham to win 25-20.
The Yellow Jackets did not allow a run like that again the rest of the match. After Ferrum got ahead 3-1 in the second set, R-MC fired off a 13-1 run to take a ten-point lead. FC did get four in a row later in the set, but by then the damage was done and R-MC finished on a 8-1 run to win 25-10.
R-MC didn't let off the gas in the third set as the Yellow Jackets fired off the first five points, all on R-MC kills as well as a service ace from senior Emily Steffan (Salem, Va. / Salem). The pace remained with R-MC as through the middle of the set, the Yellow Jackets got a 10-1 run to go ahead 20-7. The Yellow Jackets closed out the set and the match with a 25-11 victory.
Parker again led the Yellow Jackets with ten kills. Smith added eight and Wolfe finished with seven. Gubba led the Yellow Jackets with 14 assists while Steffan threw in 11. Smith was R-MC's digs leader with 12. Sophomore Danielle LaRosa (Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle) earned four blocks while Smith, Wolfe and Cunningham each had two. Steffan and sophomore Madison Warlick (Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle) each collected three service aces.
Randolph-Macon will be on the road for the next three matches. The Yellow Jackets travel to Bridgewater on Wednesday for a 7:00 PM contest before traveling to the Wid Guisler Invitational for a pair of matches in Pennsylvania next Saturday.
