Men's Soccer Falls in 2OT Thriller Against Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Randolph-Macon men's soccer team kicked off ODAC tournament play as they hit the road to battle third-seeded Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday night. The Marlins took the win in overtime to advance to the semi-finals.

The Basics

Score: Virginia Wesleyan 2, Randolph-Macon 1 (2OT)

Location/Venue: Virginia Beach, Va./Virginia Wesleyan University/Foster Field

Records: Virginia Wesleyan (12-3-4, 6-1-3 ODAC), Randolph-Macon (8-6-3, 4-4-2 ODAC)

How it Happened

  • The Marlins struck early, with a goal in just the 10th minute, but R-MC battled back the rest of the game.
  • Goalkeeper Zach Fontenot (Palmyra, Va./Fluvanna County) was a wall in goal, picking up five saves in the first half.
  • The remainder of the first frame was back and forth as both teams had plenty of chances, but both defenses held strong. R-MC's defense led by Elijah Lloyd (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) and Harrison Adams (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) was solid all game, keeping the Yellow Jackets within striking distance.
  • In the 52nd minute, Bogue Cummings (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) scored the equalizer after the setup by Dylan Matheny (Greensboro, N.C./Clover Hill) to knot the score at one.
  • The offense didn't waiver for R-MC as Colton Howell (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) and Chazz Jones (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) among the rest of the attack kept the Marlins on their heels for long stretches.
  • The score was tied at the end of a wild regulation, and with 41 seconds remaining in the second overtime frame, the Marlins scored the game winner.

Inside the Numbers

  • Defense and goalkeepers were busy as R-MC had 29 shots in the game, to couple with 35 from the Marlins. Fontenot protected the net well, stopping 15 shots.
  • Multiple players stepped up in large roles as Bryce Martin (Chesterfield, Va./Middletown) filled in at outside back and helped anchor the defense.
  • Cummings' goal was his third of the season and marks the second game in a row finding the back of the net.
  • Matheny's assist on the goal was his first of the year to couple with his two goals he has scored this season.
