Kagey Leads Women's Hoops To ODAC Opening Win

(WINCHESTER, Va.) – Impressive play by Catherine Kagey and Juliana Park helped Randolph-Macon defeat Shenandoah in the ODAC opener on Wednesday evening. The duo came off the bench to go a combined 10-for-12 from the field. The Yellow Jackets also used a strong second quarter to take the lead and never trailed the rest of the way.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 62, Shenandoah 52

Venue: James R. Wilkins Jr. Athletics & Events Center

Records: Randolph-Macon 2-0, 1-0 ODAC; Shenandoah 2-1, 0-1 ODAC

How It Happened

  • After they trailed by four after the first, the Yellow Jackets flipped the switch and used a 19-8 frame to take control of the game. Becca Anthony (Sr., Amelia, Va. / Amelia) hit a 3-pointer to spark a 9-0 run which put RMC up 16-11.
  • Catherine Kagey (So., Roanoke, Va. / Faith Christian) had a big first half with 11 points and closed it out with a pair of free throws and a layup to give the Lemon and Black a 26-19 lead at the break.
  • Momentum carried into the second half, and while both teams equaled each other with 17 points in the frame, the Yellow Jackets crashed the boards and pulled out the rebounds by a 10-4 margin in the third quarter to keep the hosts at bay.
  • The Hornets did come within a single possession after a Sierra St. Cyr jumper made the score 49-46 midway through the fourth, but Juliana Park (Fr., Fairfax Station, Va. / Davidson Day) answered with a triple to put the Jackets back up six.
  • While Kagey was largely held in check offensively in the second half, she made up for it on the glass and pulled down 10 rebounds with seven in the fourth quarter alone.

Inside The Numbers

  • Kagey led a quartet of Yellow Jackets in double figures with 13 points and registered a double-double with 13 rebounds as well. She was perfect from the field as she hit all five attempts, and missed just one of her four attempts from the free throw line.
  • Park finished with 12 points and was also impeccable from the field where she was 5-for-7 with a pair of 3-pointers.
  • Anthony totaled 11 points and was 3-for-6 from the field and 3-for-4 behind the arc.
  • Aimee DeBell (Sr., Studley, Va. / Saint Gertrude) followed with 10 points and was 5-for-8 on the night.
  • RMC controlled the boards by a 42-33 margin.
  • With Kagey and Park leading the way, Randolph-Macon's bench outscored Shenandoah's 29-12 in the game.
  • After starting out slow, RMC caught fire and shot 53.8% in the second quarter and followed it with a 61.5% clip in the third. Meanwhile the Hornets were limited to just 20% shooting in the second quarter as the Yellow Jackets took the lead.

For The Record

  • RMC has now won 12 conesecutive games in the regular season dating back to 2020.
